Schwannoma of the abdominal wall: updated literature review

Summary Background Schwannoma is a benign tumor arising from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves. It often asymptomatic and can develop in retroperitoneum, mediastinum, head neck region, upper lower extremities. abdominal wall extremely rare, but differential diagnosis with malignant neoplasms important to reduce risk undertreatment. Methods A narrative review schwannoma was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, Web Science database search terms “schwannoma”, “neurinoma”, “neurilemmoma”, “soft tissue tumors”, “neurogenic tumor”, “rectus abdominis mass”, “abdominal wall”. In addition, hospital charts were reviewed report personal experience. Results Only 9 single case-reports found English medical literature over past decade. None patients received preoperative biopsy all resected clear margins. addition review, we case 58-year-old man referred for palpable mass left quadrant. Ultrasonography magnetic resonance imaging revealed solid well-encapsulated inside rectus muscle. core lesion provided cellular this confirmed by histopathologic examination surgical specimen. Conclusions Benign rare. Percutaneous needle more common biologically aggressive malignancies, such as desmoid tumors sarcomas, may be relevant planning most appropriate management.
